Will Donald Trump withdraw from NATO?
Today, president-elect Donald Trump demanded that Denmark surrenders Greenland — and refused to rule out the use of military force. When the strongest member turns on its allies, the alliance is officially dead. NATO is no longer a united front.
Asked if he would assure the world that as he tries to take control of Greenland and the Panama Canal, he would not use "military or economic coercion," Trump refused to rule it out.
TRUMP: “We need Greenland for national security purposes. I'm not even sure Denmark has a legal claim over it. But if they do, and they don't immediately relinquish all control of Greenland, I will put massive tariffs on Denmark.”
Meanwhile, Premier of Greenland MĂște Bourup Egede stated today:
“Let me repeat - Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. Our future and fight for independence is our business. While others, including Danes and Americans, are entitled to their opinions, but we should not be caught up in the hysteria and external pressures distract us from our path. The future is ours and ours to shape. We commit exercising our rights as people and fulfilling our duties with wisdom and care. Every day is spent on working to become independent. We can and we can cooperate.”
Meanwhile, at his press conference, Trump suggested that he could use military force to acquire Panama Canal and Greenland and 'economic force' to annex Canada.
